There is that old ‘getting to know you’ question that
usually comes right after “what’s your favourite colour?”, of if you would
rather be too hot, or too cold? I
always said, I would rather be too hot.
I love hot weather, I grew up in a coastal town, where I would go for a
swim in the ocean on my lunch break.
And now, I live in this:
It snowed here in Mammoth last night and dropped about 8
inches of fresh powder (which to you people who, like me, use the metric system
is about 20cm). To leave the house
I have to put on a pair of tights underneath my jeans, a pair of socks over
that and slide my feet into my snow boots. I have to wear a thermal undershirt, hoodie and then my snow
jacket over top. The look is
completed with a beanie and gloves (both of which are merino from New
Zealand!). I dodge the men that
are employed by the Mammoth Employee Housing Department who are shovelling the
snow from our apartment’s driveway (thank goodness I don’t have to do this as
well, because it would never get done!).
Today, I am going to the post office to see if my brand new snowboard
has arrived. Because this town
lives most of its year in increment weather conditions like today, no one has a
mailbox at their house and gets everything sent to their PO boxes. This means, when my shift at the hotel
doesn’t start until 3pm, I make the trek about a mile down the road to the post
office. Really though, I’m pretty
excited, because I could be doing the return journey with my new Tiki 151
board!
My next day off isn’t until Monday, and then I will be
hoping to get up the mountain and test it out. Fingers crossed for me FedEx has brought my early Christmas
present, okay!?
